The PSLs are back, the weather is cooling, and the time has come to close the pool. For HOA pools, closing isn’t just flipping a switch—it’s a multi-day pool service closing process designed to protect both the pool and its equipment through the winter months.
Here’s what the process looks like when Metro Pools handles your pool service:
Day Zero
Day Zero is the final day for swimmers—dogs included! Once this day ends, the community pool is officially closed to residents. The very next day, our Metro Pools team begins the HOA pool service closing process.
Visit 1 / Day 1
We begin by securing the pool: adding a bike lock to the gate (unless your HOA uses a card-access system) and shutting off the heater. We do this right away, especially the day after Labor Day, since some communities decide they’d like their HOA pool service extended a little longer. Taking this step makes it easy for us to pivot if you’d like to keep the pool open past the holiday.
Visit 2
Next, we lower the water level. We’ll drop off and secure a pump to bring the pool down to the correct level. If you notice the pump sitting on a step or hanging at an angle—please leave it as is. It may look unusual, but it’s placed intentionally. Sometimes, well-meaning residents adjust the pump, which can interfere with the pool closing service.
Visit 3
This is where the heavy lifting happens in the pool service closing process. We:
- Blow out the return lines and skimmers
- Drain the pool equipment
- Remove as much water as possible from the system to prevent winter damage
Note: By law, we can only blow water out up to the backflow preventer.
Visit 4
The final visit pulls it all together for your HOA pool closing service:
- Add “crush buckets” to the skimmers
- Apply winterizing chemicals to keep algae away and protect plaster
- Remove and store handrails (when a cover is in use) with the pool furniture
- Install the pool cover
- Shut off the gas when needed
Depending on your HOA’s preferences, we can also:
- Add a heater to the pump room
- Use heat tape
- Or turn electricity off completely
Result: Your HOA pool is secure, protected, and ready to weather the off-season. When spring arrives, reopening will be smooth and stress-free with Metro Pools’ reliable pool service.
At Metro Pools, your HOA pool service contract covers you through December 31. If a sudden freeze happens and you have concerns, we’re still here for you—because we don’t just take care of pools, we take care of our Not-Your-Average-Customers. Even if your pool is closed and shut down, you can count on us for peace of mind.
